Fast food nation Chapter 8

Kenny is the highlight of this chapter. I can't beleive everything that man went through, and always getting injured working in a slaughter house. Why would he put himself through all of that? When I was reading this chapter, I was waiting after every injury mentioned that he had quit, or found another job. However, he kept going back, even after a short time of being able to heal completly. He had broken bones, a heart attack, hit by a train and more. How could anyone want to go back to the same place and the same job after all those injuries happened because of it? I feel awful for the guy, and at the end of the chapter they mention that he is only 46. Forty-six and hes coughing up blood, back pain, chest pains, and he can barely walk. I have a lot of respect for Kenny, but at the same time I just want to call him stupid for putting himself through all of that. Because of his injuries at such a young age, I dont beleive Kenny will live to be that long, and its so sad to see that happen to someone. The company should have taken responsibility from the beginning but instead they betrayed Kenny's loyalty to the company. Kenny should have received millions of dollars for everything he had to go through.

Kenny was loyal to the company because this was the only work Kenny had the skills to do. The company liked his blind loyality and because he never called OSHA to file a complaint against the company. Kenny's injuries were adding up to be a liability to the company and he was cut out to further eliminate any connections to work related injuries.
The companys management style seemed to be never let anyone stay long enough as to keep the union off balance and to avoid any action against them for their wrong doing.
The cut back on FDA inspectors in my opinion shows how much influence the industry has with the federal goverment. The OSHA is their to insure the safety and health of the American worker, but Schlosser wrote that the OSHA inspectors were cut(p.179).
Employers are responsible to provide a safe work enviroment and the federal goverment who created an agency to monitor, and enforce these policies are not doing their job.
Big business seems to always win.
